“Approaching a wall in Beirut is not so hard of a thing to do. The filthier the better. People keep asking: How do you spot it? Are you allowed? Do you have permission? I internally laugh and think to myself who’s going to stop you from touching a filthy, abandoned, cracked wall in Beirut? Who’s going to go up to you and stop you from stomping on piles of accumulated garbage?
No one.
Touching a wall in Beirut is easy, it will be dusty and paradoxically very humid. Touching a wall in Beirut in summer is refreshing, in winter it’s freezing cold. Humidity speaks on Beiruti walls like Mediterranean waves on the concrete eaten shore it slowly creeps on the surface and leaves its mark with yellowish, blackish Spots. When you touch a wall in Beirut, its layers speak to you, its chapped plasters tell you much more stories than history books. A wall in Beirut has seen it all. But it is barely seen. Layers, chapped plaster, cracks, and light.
A wall in Beirut is not just a wall, a wall in Beirut is a piece of traumatic, violent, racist, classist, secular, patriarchal, colonial history, facing a numbed up saturated society, sickened with collective amnesia. A wall in Beirut has many stories to tell, but is constantly pasted with the same political portraits year after year. The same adds, flyers of perpetual parties. Parties, and parties. Parties to gavage you with political ideologies. Parties to numb you up with music and substances. Touching a wall in Beirut regurgitates the unquantifiable nostalgia we’ve been fed through ‘biberons’. The emotion the country lives upon and gets off on.
Touching a wall in Beirut is a haptic reminder of what reality is made of, of what reality feels like: a broken society dwelling on mythologies, ideologies, and glories of the past.”
